When you buy fertilizer, you'll see three numbers on the label. These numbers show the percentage of nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium, respectively, which are the primary nutrients needed to feed your lawn. So a 20-5-10 bag will have 20 percent nitrogen, 5 percent phosphate, and 10 percent potassium. The rest of the bag usually contains filler material that helps ensure an even application. The 20-5-10 mixture is a good basic mix for spring.
Start by applying fertilizer around the perimeter of the yard first, and then fill in the middle, working in one direction. Then, spread it again, moving in a perpendicular direction. This crisscrossing pattern ensures much better coverage and helps prevent over-applying the fertilizer. "When it comes to spreading fertilizer,” Turnbull says, “too little is better than too much. I always recommend erring on the side of too little.” A heavy dose of fertilizer isn’t only a waste of money, but it can burn and kill the grass.
Dallas and its surrounding area are mostly flat; the city itself lies at elevations ranging from 450 to 550 feet. The western edge of the Austin Chalk Formation, a limestone escarpment (also known as the "White Rock Escarpment"), rises 230 feet and runs roughly north-south through Dallas County. South of the Trinity River, the uplift is particularly noticeable in the neighborhoods of Oak Cliff and the adjacent cities of Cockrell Hill, Cedar Hill, Grand Prairie, and Irving. Marked variations in terrain are also found in cities immediately to the west in Tarrant County surrounding Fort Worth, as well as along Turtle Creek north of Downtown. Source: Wikipedia Dallas, TX

Hi Cathy! I myself was having same problem as you are. Just bought my home in February and when spring came I noticed my lawn was brown and dead in places but it is improving as green sprouts are coming in. To answer your question have a soil test done. I did and it showed me what my soil lacked and what fertilizer i needed to apply. You can find out your self if your grass is diseased by insects by grabbing your grass near the soil if it pulls out with no problem this is an indication of insect disease to your grass. You can get a soil test kit at lowes or home depot. it will let you know what your soil needs to green up your lawn. Some people just by any fertilizer but you need to be careful if you dont know what your lawn soil is lacking you could burn your lawn with applying the wrong fertilizer.
Lawn maintenance is more than just mowing, thatching and aerating. Turf grass is a heavy feeder and requires regular moisture to look its best. All plants benefit from basic macro- and micro-nutrients. Grass, in particular, needs extra macro-nutrients which can come from air and water but which are used in such quantity that supplemental applications are beneficial.

Lawn irrigation is the practice of supplying water to land or crops to help growth, typically by means of channels. Whether residential, commercial or agricultural, water irrigation is an important practice to maintain for a better looking, better-producing lawn or crop. What's best is that you get to create your own lawn irrigation system with a few clicks of your button.
You may need to prepare your system for winter to avoid damaging or breaking pipes and connections. In temperate and warm regions, you may get away with simply covering above-ground piping with insulation (in these climates, the ground doesn't get cold enough to freeze). For colder climates, this winterization process can be a DIY job, but especially for larger landscapes, it might be beneficial to hire a professional.
Mowing your grass has become a part of most lawn owners weekly chore list. Lawn mowing is the most common practice in lawn care. Lawn mowing is also the most frequently done landscaping practice. It typically takes just 30 minutes to mow the average home lawn (10,000 square feet), which is time that adds up. While lawn mowing may seem simple, every time you cut your grass, you are either one step closer to lush and healthy looking grass or crippling its chances of survival. Proper mowing doesn’t give your lawn an attractive appearance, it also increases the density of your grass. When done correctly, you will groom healthy, strong, and drought tolerant grass. Improper lawn mowing can open your lawn up to environmental stresses, making it challenging for your lawn to flourish.
